Description

Gori & Uplistsikhe – Cave City & Ancient Georgia Tour. This journey takes you into the heart of Georgia’s history, where ancient rock-hewn cities meet medieval fortresses and more recent Soviet-era stories. Leaving Tbilisi, we drive west through the countryside of the Shida Kartli region, a landscape of open fields, villages, and distant mountain views, gradually revealing a different side of Georgia beyond the capital. Our first stop is Uplistsikhe, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the country, dating back over 3,000 years. Carved directly into the rock, this remarkable cave city once stood along the Silk Road and served as an important cultural and religious center. Walking through its tunnels, halls, and narrow passages, you’ll discover ancient pagan temples, early Christian structures, and unique living spaces that tell the story of Georgia’s transition through centuries. We then continue to Gori, a town known for its strategic importance and layered history. Here, you can visit the Stalin Museum, dedicated to Joseph Stalin, who was born in Gori. The museum includes his preserved childhood home, personal railway carriage, and exhibits reflecting the Soviet period. This visit is optional and can be adjusted based on your interests. Above the town, we visit the peaceful Gorijvari Monastery, located on a hilltop with beautiful panoramic views over Gori and the surrounding plains. This quiet and spiritual place offers a different perspective of the region, combining history, nature, and a sense of calm away from the city. We also stop at the nearby Gori Fortress, a medieval stronghold that has guarded this area for centuries. A short walk up the hill rewards you with wide views and a deeper understanding of the region’s importance as a crossroads through Georgian history. Optional experiences can be arranged upon request, such as a traditional lunch in a local restaurant or a visit to a family setting to experience authentic Georgian hospitality. These experiences are available at an additional cost. With a blend of ancient history, cultural contrasts, light adventure, and scenic landscapes, this tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Georgia’s past and present — all within a single unforgettable day.
